Esther Muddiman, Dr

Lecturer at Cardiff University

I'm a lecturer in Sociology of Education focussing on youth activism, intergenerational justice and sustainability. I am inspired by bell hooks and Paulo Friere, believing that all education is political and that teacher/learners have an important role to play in (re)making the world. As co-founder of the Youth Activism Project, I have been researching children and young people's involvement in protests and campaigning activities, seeking to understand how these relate to schooling and family relationships.
I’m also part of a team working with Grow Cardiff on the co-creation of resources to enable more children to enjoy the wellbeing and educational benefits of gardening. Previously I led on an ESRC funded project investigating the articulation of Children’s Rights via UNICEF Child Friendly Cities accreditation as part of a Civil Society Research Centre.
I’m Cardiff co-lead for the GW4 Climate Justice Education Research Network with a particular interest in creative research including zines, drawing and mapping. I’ve also become increasingly interested in how our current educational practices are shaped by colonial legacies. I worked with a summer intern on an ‘alternative guide’ to our university building, and lead on the Dude Walls project (prosiect Wal y Bois) raising questions about who we choose to depict in institutional spaces. I am also cataloguing stories of student activism in archives of university student newspapers to better understand key vectors of protest during the 1980s, contrasting them with the increasingly securitised landscape of universities today. I am an advisory group member of the Learned Society of Wales Early Career Network. Outside of my university role you can find me painting, drawing and making ceramics, attending protests and volunteering as a Legal Observer.
