Jennie Golding, Professor

UCL Professor of mathematics policy and practice at UCL Institute of Education

Jennie is Professor of mathematics policy and practice at UCL Institute of Education; her academic Profile can be found here. She moved to HE work after a career spent teaching and supporting teacher development across 5-18 mathematics education. Jennie has contributed to national and international mathematics education policy, curriculum and assessment development over many years: her research reflects this policy/practice interface and privileges the voices of learners at all ages/stages. Her work has included substantial strands around teacher knowledge and education for empowering mathematics teaching, and also the addressing of equitable opportunity for mathematical thriving across gender and background. Jennie has been involved in both PISA and TIMSS, leading the research for TIMSS 2023 in England and for TIMSS 2027 in Wales. With Rachel, she has recently written a mathematics educator-focused book to be published open access, that evidences the potential of TIMSS resources to enrich and support meaning-making mathematics learning at classroom level.
Jennie has been active in mathematics teacher initial and continuing education, and in mathematics education policy, in a number of jurisdictions in the global South: she believes almost all learners can enjoy, and be empowered by, mathematical knowledge and thinking, if they have appropriate teaching, and is passionate about promoting that as a matter of global equity. Jennie’s other work focuses on the enhancement of research ethics and integrity in education research at all levels, and on systematic collaborative doctoral supervision development that is inclusive of local cultures and epistemologies.
