John Whitcher, Mr

University of South Wales

I am a Lecturer in Integrated Health, Social Care, and Post-Registration Nursing at the University of South Wales. I have extensive experience teaching and assessing across further and higher education settings in Wales, with a particular focus on Health and Social Care curricula from Levels 3 to 6. My teaching expertise includes human anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, and professional development, underpinned by a commitment to fostering critical thinking, reflective practice, and academic excellence among learners.
Alongside my lecturing role, I am undertaking doctoral research (PhD) at the University of South Wales that examines the regulation and governance of Access to Higher Education Diplomas in Wales. My research examines how Access programmes are designed, funded, and quality assured, as well as their contributions to widening participation and supporting diverse learner pathways into higher education.
I am deeply passionate about making higher education accessible for all, with a particular emphasis on supporting mature students and individuals from non-traditional educational backgrounds. My broader research interests encompass educational policy, widening participation, adult learning, and the philosophical foundations of education, with a particular focus on neoliberalism, governmentality, and utilitarianism. I am committed to promoting inclusive and transformative learning opportunities that enable all learners to realise their personal, academic and professional potential.
