He is a graduate of Dar-ul-Uloom (traditional Islamic higher education instituition) and is currently working on the latter stages of his PhD. Using an interpretive phenomenological analysis approach, Kamal is exploring through self-narratives how Dar-ul-Uloom graduates construct their identity as they navigate and negotiate their experiences of being an Aalim (Islamic scholar) in modern day Britain. Kamal is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and his publications include articles on the identity construction of Dar-ul-Uloom graduates in modern Britain, translanguaging in Madrasahs and how non-traditional learners in HE can be supported with critical thinking skills.
