Karl Kitching is Professor of Public Education at the University of Birmingham. His research and teaching focuses on addressing multiple inequalities in education, in childhood and in young people’s lives, particularly in relation to race, religion, gender and sexuality, and a critical approach to secular-religious relations in education. His most recent work includes the Leverhulme Trust-funded project 'Free Expression at School? The Making of Youth Engagements with Race and Faith'. His books include 'Childhood, Religion and School Injustice' (2020) and 'The Politics of Compulsive Education: Racism and Learner-Citizenship' (2014). His significant papers include 'Education policy and 'free speech' on race and faith equality at school (with Kandemir, Gholami and Rahman, Journal of Education Policy 2024), Towards Critical Secular Studies in Education (Discourse 2023, with Gholami) and Contemporary, racialised conflicts over LGBT-inclusive education' Educational Review, 2022).
