Louise Barrett, Dr

Senior Lecturer at University of the West of Scotland

I am a Senior Lecturer at the University of the West of Scotland with lead responsibility for initial teacher education. Prior to joining UWS in April 2006, I taught English and worked as a Support for Learning teacher in Ayrshire secondary schools. At UWS, my teaching responsibilities relate to English and literacy, inclusive education and Learning for Sustainability. I was subject tutor for secondary English for many years, during which time I undertook related research for a Doctorate in Education at the University of Glasgow and graduated in June 2024.

I represent the Scottish Council of Deans of Education on the English and Literacy Curriculum Improvement Cycle Steering Group. I am a founding member of the Scottish Universities Inclusion Group and contributed to the writing and revising of three editions of the National Framework for Inclusion (SUIG, 2008, 2014, 2022). As Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Lead for the Scottish Council of Deans of Education, I co-chair the Anti-racism in Initial Teacher Education Network, which supports the implementation of the National Framework for Anti-racism in Initial Teacher Education (Mohammed, 2023).
