Olivia Lutwak, Ms

University of Oxford

Olivia Lutwak is a doctoral student in education at the University of Oxford. Her research examines the securitization of schools and the criminalization of students in the United States as a policy response to gun violence, with particular attention to how these dynamics affect students’ sense of identity, belonging, and well-being. Olivia’s work bridges education policy and practice, drawing on her background as both a teacher and a policy researcher to explore the intersections of schooling, safety, and social justice. Her broader research interests include educational equity, student voice, mixed methods, and the relationship between public policy and everyday school experiences.

Before beginning her doctoral studies, Olivia worked as a research analyst contracting with the U.S. Department of Education, providing technical assistance to states and conducting quantitative and qualitative research on topics such as culturally relevant pedagogy, student social-emotional well-being, and the implementation of the Every Student Succeeds Act. She began her career as a first grade teacher in Chicago, where her students’ experiences continue to shape her research and advocacy.
