Sophina Choudry is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Manchester. She focuses her
work in the area of mathematics education and sociology of education. She is particularly
interested in understanding social and educational inequality as mediated by race, gender,
and social class from a sociocultural perspective. Her recent work has led her to examine
the role of inequitable power relations in reproducing systemic inequal-
ities within local communities in England (including school communities), and the con-
sequences for collective action aiming to challenge such oppressive forces at play in local
practices. For this, she brings Bourdieu’s work and Cultural Historical Activity theory and
Vygotsky into dialogue to focus on the power non-dominant maths students have rather than lack.
Sophina Choudry was awarded the 2017 ½¿É«µ¼º½ Doctoral Thesis Award for her thesis: Mathematics Capital in the Classroom and Wider Educational Field: Intersections of Ethnicity, Gender and Social Class.
