Thomas Ralph, Dr

Senior Lecturer in Education at Exeter University

I am the Head of Initial Teacher Education in the School of Education at the University of Exeter and I teach and supervise across PGCE, Masters and PhD programmes. Prior to working at Exeter, I spent 11 years teaching in various schools in London and Dorset. I also worked as a consultant at SMILE Maths developing educational software. Most recently I was the head of mathematics in a school in challenging circumstances.
My research interests focus on resistant students in school, how they negotiate and reconfigure school spaces to assert agency, act to make school the kind of place they want it to be and make their voices heard. My work is underpinned by theoretical perspectives from critical pedagogy, Foucault’s notions of power and resistance, and Massey’s theories of space and place, offering a nuanced understanding of how space and agency intersect in schooling. I have also recently been involved in research with Devon and Cornwall Police investigating practices to reduce youth reoffending. Methodologically, whilst most of my work draws on qualitative approaches, including ethnography I am also familiar with quantitative methods. In addition, I maintain a strong commitment to initial teacher education and have recently taken part in a Europe wide project aiming at improving mentoring in teacher education courses.
