Culturally Responsive Storytelling in/with the outdoors for learning

This one-day event brings together practitioners, students and educators who are interested in nature-based learning, outdoor learning, play-based education, and beyond to share insights in how culturally responsive storytelling can enhance learning & teaching experiences.

鈥淗uman beings are storytelling animals鈥, Alasdair MacIntyre would say. However, the use of story for culturally responsive education is still an emerging area of practice-based learning in the UK and Internationally. Centring on culturally responsive storytelling and gleaning insights from different disciplines and learning practices – including, but not limited to, schooling, higher education, outdoor education, play-based education and education in the community – we hope to share these insights to aid disciplinary and practice-based learning and teaching.

The day will take the form of a range of practical story-telling workshops from different areas of education. Throughout the day there will be opportunities for listening, reflective and noticing (using techniques from John Mason, among others). We intend to make use of local outdoor spaces around Moray House, whilst also considering wider contexts and settings. The day will end in the creation of a shared community-created story as a way of taking the learning back to our places of education.

We intend to invite other education settings (for example The Peoples鈥 Story Museum Edinburgh, the Scottish Storytelling Centre etc) to share with participants their approaches to culturally responsive storytelling.
