Babs Horton

Novelist and playwright

Babs Horton is a graduate of Plymouth Marjon University and the first in her family to attend university. Her debut novel, A Jarful of Angels (Simon & Schuster), won the Pendleton May First Novel Award and led to a four-book contract, including Dandelion Soup, Wildcat Moon and Recipes for Cherubs. She has served as Royal Literary Fund Writing Fellow at the University of Plymouth and as a consultant fellow, training professional writers to take up posts in Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services units across the UK. Babs has run creative workshops with companies and institutions, and worked as a writing mentor for young people in partnership with Plymouth Libraries and Literature Works. In 2019, she was longlisted for the Bruntwood Prize for her first play Wings. Subsequent plays include The Usher (Theatre Royal Plymouth, 2022) and In the Lady Garden (Edinburgh Fringe, 2024), which won the Pleasance and Theatre Royal Plymouth Partnership award and was shortlisted for multiple prizes.
