Craig Johnston, Dr

Senior Lecturer at University of the West of England Bristol

Dr Craig Johnston is a committee member of the Alternative Provision Research Network, a network of scholars and practitioners working in AP who are committed to social justice for children in alternative forms of provision. This means rethinking AP in ways that incorporate children’s voices on their education, and challenging taken-for-granted assumptions about education where they are problematic.
Craig’s interests lie in youth justice issues, alternative provision and school exclusion. His published work in those areas held a rating of world leading in REF 2021. Craig has more than 30 years’ experience in the fields of Youth Justice, Psychology, Education, Social Work and Health in the UK and US. He has led multi-agency teams inter/nationally, and was previously a subject group lead with doctoral, master’s and bachelor’s level teaching commitments on Criminology, Education, Youth Work, Health, Sociology and Social Work courses at various universities.
