Graham French, Dr

Senior Lecturer at Bangor University

Graham French is an educational researcher whose work sits at the intersection of adventure education, outdoor learning, affective learning, youth voice and child poverty. His doctoral research critically examined models-based approaches to adventure education in the Welsh curriculum context, with a particular focus on affective learning and student experience.
Alongside his academic work, Graham has been involved in Welsh Government–commissioned research projects focused on outdoor learning, curriculum and educational practice in Wales. In parallel, he has played a key role in a series of third-sector and community-based research projects exploring child poverty, youth participation and co-produced support systems, working closely with young people, practitioners and organisations including GISDA, Gwynedd Youth Services and the Bangor Maritime Learning Centre.
Through sustained collaboration with Prof. Lori Beckett, his work has advanced asset-based, youth-centred approaches to participation and voice. Most recently, his outdoor learning research contributed directly to policy development in Wales, informing a Private Members’ Bill in the Senedd. Graham is a regular national and international conference speaker and is committed to supporting early career researchers to develop confidence, criticality and real-world impact.
