Nicole Brown is Associate Professor at the UCL Institute of Education and an internationally recognised scholar in embodied inquiry, creative research methodologies, and qualitative research ethics. Her work explores how embodied, visual, arts-based, and participatory approaches can deepen understanding of complex lived experiences and transform how knowledge is generated, communicated, and applied. Challenging conventional notions of research as a purely cognitive endeavour, she advocates for approaches that foreground the body, emotion, creativity, and relationships as integral to research practice and knowledge production.
Her interdisciplinary research spans higher education, disability, chronic illness, neurodivergence, and researcher development, examining how creative and embodied methodologies can illuminate experiences that are often overlooked or difficult to articulate through conventional qualitative methods. Across this work, she has developed innovative approaches that support more inclusive, ethical, and socially transformative research while amplifying the voices of those whose perspectives are frequently marginalised.
Nicole has authored and edited numerous influential books and publications, including Photovoice Reimagined, Making the Most of Your Research Journal, Embodied Inquiry: Research Methods, and Ethical Dilemmas in Education Research: ½¿É«µ¼º½ Case Studies for Researchers by Researchers. Her forthcoming books include the edited collections Ethics in Practitioner Research: Interdisciplinary Perspectives (2027), and the Handbook of Research Ethics in Education (2027).
