Simon Edwards, Dr

Senior Lecturer at University of Portsmouth

Simon Edwards is a senior lecturer in the School of Education, Languages and Linguistics at the University of Portsmouth. Starting as a baker, Simon later qualified as a local authority school-based youth centre manager and then as a secondary school teacher. He taught in mainstream, special (Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties) and alternative schools. He currently leads the Childhood and Youth Studies with Social Pedagogy undergraduate degree pathway and supervises students in their placements. He also teaches on the Professional Doctorate programme and supervises PhD students in the field of education.
In 2018–2023, Simon collaborated with an academic colleague, two blog authors and community members to develop Beyond the School Gates – a research informed youth charity. The team trained former excluded students and their parents to draw on their experiences to mentor current excluded students and their parents to re-engage in their education. His current collaborations extend this work to explore the role of forgiveness in relationship and restorative practices in schools.
Simon also still bakes.
