Tom Crick is Professor of Digital Education & Policy at Swansea University, a joint appointment between the School of Education, the Department of Computer Science, and the Faculty of Health & Life Sciences. While his disciplinary background is in computer science, his academic interests sit at the research/public policy interface: STEM education and skills, curriculum reform, science and innovation policy, data science, computational social science, public service innovation, and infrastructure and skills for the digital/data economy.

He has been heavily involved in curriculum reform in Wales over the past ten years. In 2013, Tom chaired the Welsh Government’s independent review of the ICT curriculum, which led to the development of a new bilingual Digital Competence Framework for all learners aged 3-16, published in September 2016. He also chaired the development of the Science & Technology area of learning and experience in the new Curriculum for Wales (2017-2020), which was published in January 2020. Tom was also inaugural chair of the National Network for Excellence in Science & Technology (2017-2019), a £4m strategic investment by the Welsh Government to support the research capacity-building and professional development of practitioners in this key area of the new Curriculum for Wales.

Alongside this work, Tom is an Editor of the Wales Journal of Education (University of Wales Press), a bilingual platinum open access journal, as well as the incoming Editor-in-Chief of The Computer Journal (OUP). He is currently Vice-Chair of the ACM Europe Council, having previously been a Vice-President of BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT. He is also a Commissioner of the National Infrastructure Commission for Wales (2018-present), as well as a member of the expert panel for the Welsh Government’s Review of Digital Innovation and the Future of Work, which published its findings in September 2019.
