Associate Professor of Sociology of Education at University of Southampton

Dr Achala Gupta is Associate Professor in Sociology of Education at the University of Southampton. She is Director of Internationalisation (Research) and Co Director of the Centre for Research in Inclusion at the Southampton Education School. Dr Gupta also co-convenes the Education Study Group of the British Sociological Association (BSA) and is a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the British Journal of Sociology of Education.
Dr Gupta’s research adopts a sociological approach to investigating educational issues. Her project, ‘When AI (Artificial Intelligence) Meets AI (Academic Integrity)’, was funded by the 2023/24 British Educational Research Association Small Grants Fund under the theme Education in a digital age: Perspectives from policy and practice. Findings from this research have been disseminated through an open access project report and a Blog post, both available on the ½¿É«µ¼º½ website. In addition, she has led research projects on ‘shadow education’ exploring the role of social actors in non-formal education (parents, students, and teachers) and has recently concluded a project on teacher retention (funded by the Society for Educational Studies), examining policy enactment of mentorship provisions for early career teachers in England.
Terms such as ‘Coached Habitus’, ‘Teacher Entrepreneurialism’, and ‘Shadow Education Timescape’ she has coined provide important foundations for new research approaches to understanding deeply the interactions between education and society. Dr Gupta’s contributions to her field have been recognised through global awards, including the Professor M. N. Srinivas Memorial Prize and the Hans L. Zetterberg Prize.
